Hatzic Elementary turned 100 in 2011!

School Type:

Hatzic Elementary upper is a full service public school enrolling children aged Five to Twelve years old and spanning Kindergarten to Grade Seven. It is situated close to the North bank of the Fraser River in the community of Hatzic in the Fraser Valley area of the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Hatzic is a part of the District of Mission. This area can be considered a suburb of Vancouver which, itself, is about 80 kilometers downstream close to where the Fraser empties into the Pacific Ocean. This school is part of School District #75 (Mission).

Size:

Averaging 300 students and twenty staff this school is a long low structure with the oldest section dating from 1911 and with additions in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. The picture below shows the earliest section of the building. Later added on to, this section now houses the school's senior classes. The section pictured below was gutted and renovated in the mid 1990s, new insulation, flooring, wall materials, wiring and windows were fitted. In 2004 the entire heating and airhandling equipment throughout the school was removed and replaced at a cost of about $500,000.

The school is just below Westminster Abbey, an imposing monastery built high on the ridge behind it. Its bell tower is just visible in the photo above.
